September 11th

This year on September 11th the Ploessl/Nathanson cluster (9-12 year olds) came and helped our class make a craft for Patriot Day.  Obviously my students were not even born yet on September 11, 2001 (gosh I feel old!) and with them being so young we have to be careful with how we handle this day.  We generally try and spend the day celebrating our community helpers and remember those that have given their lives for our country.

The students made American flags out of safety pins and red, white and blue beads.  They turned out really cute.  It was a wonderful learning experience for all the students.

Shelf Work

Surprise, surprise I'm behind on my blogging!  What can I say.....life happens.  And truth be told the only reason I have the time to write a blog now is because my grandmother was in a bad car wreck and I'm out at the hospital with her.....so while she's napping.....I'm blogging!

I wanted to show some pictures of a few of our shelf work activities from the beginning of the school year.

The work is put on trays that are on the shelves around the room.  The children select a tray and take it to a seat in the room.  After the children have completed the work they put the tray back on the shelf and select other work.  This is similar to how the Montessori system that is used in our preschool.
